The Pebble In My Hand
It seems there’s a never ending quest for the Left to take the pebble in my hand.
I posted “Has The Left Invented A New Math” two days ago in which I challenged the math of USAToday and the Left.
Today I got a comment back from SpudsMcKenzie:
Where do you get your numbers from?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the unemployment rate sits at 10%. Well, you got that right! But, they also list the number of unemployed at 15.8 million, not 7.2 million. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf.
So let’s take a look at the math. If 15.8 million people are unemployed and the unemployment rate is 10% then this must mean that the total workforce is 158 million. A much more realistic number, if you ask me. So, 0.8% of 158 million is…wait for it… 1.264 million. Sounds like the math is right to me.
One question though. Why is this a big deal to you? The numbers are right and they make sense.
And when you reference material in your posts you really should stay away from conservative news sources. They are not trustworthy. Not to say liberal news sources are either. But if you do, you should probably try to find an alternative, non-conservative source of information to compare with. This will give you more credibility.
Now Spuds, a member of the left, thinks he’s got me. He even enlightens us with numbers provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and announces it’s actually 15.8 million who are unemployed.
But this is what Spuds had hoped no one would see in the BLS link he provided:
In December, both the number of unemployed persons, at 15.3 million, and the unemployment rate,at 10.0 percent, were unchanged. At the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed persons was 7.7 million, and the unemployment rate was 5.0 percent.
Now let’s look past the fact that in 2007 both chambers of Congress were controlled by Democrats and Barack Obama was a member of Congress at that time. Let’s look past the fact that both chambers of Congress are still controlled by Democrats and that Barack Obama is now POTUS.
Spud’s comment is correct, however, it only proves that the Left has indeed invented a new math.
Before Obama became President, there were 7.7 million people unemployed and the unemployment rate was at 5%. Now economists say that Obama has saved an additional 1.2 million jobs because of his stimulus plan.
How can that be? Obama’s plan wasn’t in effect at the start of this recession in 2007. In fact, unemployment has increased by 7.6 million and the unemployment rate has doubled to 10%. So Obama’s using numbers from before the recession started? Even before he and the Democrats in Congress thought of, much less, implemented the “stimulus” plan? Giggle, snort, giggle.
But wait, there’s more Spuds. The link you provided from BLS also states:
The civilian labor force participation rate fell to 64.6% in December. The employment-population ratio declined to 58.2 %.
If jobs were saved as a result of Obama’s stimulus plan, then at the very least these rates would have remained the same.
But wait, there’s more Spuds. Obama’s own OMB Director provides us with the calculation of jobs saved:
if the project is being funded with stimulus dollars – even if the person worked at that company or organization before and will work the same place afterwards – that’s a stimulus job
I’ll go back to a question in my original post:
“If Obama saved a job that was never there to be saved, should we believe Obama ever saved it?”
So Spuds, allow me to let you in on a little secret. The post that you commented on is called a trap post. It’s a post which allows one to trap another and actually help the author of the post prove his point. You did a great job in helping me out. I can’t thank you enough.
When you can take the pebble from my hand grasshopper Spuds, you then can talk to me about credibility. Until then practice, my student, practice.
