The Art of Distraction Obama Style

Cartoon by Michael Ramirez
I have lambasted people many times on Twitter over the lack of critical thinking skills displayed. I do so with confidence and sadness. It seems that we as Americans have abandoned the art of critical thinking and fully embraced the art of distraction. Allow me to illustrate with the current debate on healthcare.
The public discourse has focused on the “public-option plan” and let me be clear: Americans have 1,300 plans from which to choose right now. A government run plan has nothing better to offer to any American. No government plan ever has and no government plan ever will. It’s been proven time and again. But this post isn’t about debating the public option plan – that’s one of the distractions from the current Administration.
The public discourse has also focused on the number of uninsured people in America. The magic number floating around has been 50 million uninsured. Let’s break that number down, courtesy of Cincinnatus:
- U. S Population: 307 million
- Total Uninsured: 47 million
- Not enrolled: 14 million
- Earning over $75k: 10 million
- Illegal Immigrants: 9.4 million
So we see that there is 13.6 million who are uninsured. The CBO estimates that, even without a public option factored in, it will cost $1,000,000,000,000 (trillion) for healthcare reform. To put it another way that’s $73,529.00 per uninsured person. Let me remind you that the CBO’s numbers are WITHOUT a public option plan. You can learn more about this here – The Reality of Health Care. Again, this is another distraction coming from the current Administration.
So just what is it we are being distracted from you ask? Well, one merely has to look at what upset the AMA so much about what was in Obama’s speech or rather what was not. My following analysis is taken from a great article by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, an AP writer. You can read the full article here: Doctors’ boos show Obama’s tough road.
Obama told the AMA that he would NOT help them with their top priority – tort reform. Why is this the AMA’s and physicians top priority throughout the country? Because it is the single item that has the most profound effect on healthcare.
First, by enacting true tort reform such as loser pays and limiting damage awards, it would be going against the very supporters of Obama. The trial lawyers and unions. Obama is worried about health care and doing what’s right. He’s worried about his votes.
Obama did indicate he’s willing to explore alternatives. He’s supported programs “which hospitals and doctors are encouraged to admit mistakes, correct them and offer compensation.” Hmmm, okay Prez, so no tort reform but lets create more government programs so that the government can exert control over the private lives of both doctors and patients right? How about we just institute tort reform if you are truly interested in real health care reform?
The Obama administration will have you believe that one of the major reasons that health care is broken is due to doctors ordering tests that have little or no value to the patients. However what Obama & Co fail to mention is that doctors order these tests because they are burdened by an overwhelming need if they get sued, to cover ALL the bases.
Am I saying that patients should not be allowed to bring legal action against doctors who have clearly screwed up in providing medical services and health care? Absolutely not. However, in the current environment it is well known, when a patient sues a doctor or hospital chances are no court action will ensue and a check will be cut. The insurance company merely keeps raising the rates to compensate, the lawyers get a nice fat check, and the doctors and patients continue to suffer.
“Obama assured the doctors that his plan would provide them with objective information on what treatments work best, with new computerized tools to better manage their patient case loads, and with support for harried solo practitioners to form networks.”
Now I don’t know about you but that’s a clear indication that Obama & Co. clearly want a hand in deciding clinical outcomes for the patients and the doctors. What government can provide better objective information on what treatments can work best than the doctor and patient themselves?
If you look carefully at the President’s Health care plan, and with the scant detail that he’s given, you can clearly see that he’s not interested in helping doctors and patients with better quality healthcare. He’s only interested in taking over another industry for his benefit and the benefit of his supporters. He fundamentally, through his plan, ignores the oath taken by doctors – “Do no harm”.
In closing I want to make it clear to all Americans why I say Obama is practicing the art of distraction rather than deception.
You, Americans, have let yourselves be distracted. If you would merely practice and use critical thinking on a daily basis then nobody can “victimize” you with deception. You, Americans, are your own worst enemy. You allow the President and the Congress to distract you.
You get what you deserve and if you allow Obama and Company to move their healthcare system forward – well you’ll get what you deserve – lower quality healthcare, higher taxes, and bigger government. Have fun with that.
