Marriage is not a Right

I’ve had a really interesting discussion with a gay man – @JSpikEThinG on Twitter today. I won’t go do a play by play but basically what he said was that Miss California is against gay marriage and that he wants the same rights as heterosexual couples.
The problem with this argument is that every American is afforded the same rights under the Constitution of the United States. Whether you are gay, straight, bi, black, white, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, etc – We all have the same rights under the US Constitution.
So let’s take a look at the real issue (s) here and see if we can come up with a good solution. I’m going out on a limb in an attempt to layout what the overall picture is so please add your comments as you see fit.
On the LGBT side we have a group of human beings who appear to want the same rights as a heterosexual couple does. IMHO opinion they do. If you or your partner is sick or dying and you want to be able to make decisions on his or her medical care, a power of attorney will take care of that. If you want to own a home together your easily afforded that ability to do so this very minute. If you want estate rights in case you partner dies, a written will and testament solves that. So you get my point. If you want to adopt then by all means do so right now just like anyone else. The “rights” are already there. What I believe that the LGBT wants is the financial benefits associated with being married. Ok sounds reasonable and I can understand that.
On the heterosexual married side we have a group of human beings who want the definition of marriage to remain has it has for centuries. That the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. The biggest reason is because that marriage and reproduction between a man and woman is an occurence in the natural order of things. What I mean by that is a man and a man cannot procreate nor can a woman and a woman couple either; not naturally at least.
Come on stay with me everyone.
I keep hearing from the LGBT crowd how Christians, heterosexuals, etc are completely against gays and dont want them to have any rights. Well I’ll call bullshit on that one. One of the Christian principles is that you are to love everyone equally and for the vast majority of Christians that is a reality. As with any group there are extremes that are warped or misguided.
There’s a huge disconnect here and not a better illustration can be provided than with Prop 8 in California. On November 4th, 2008 with a majority vote, Californians decided to retain the traditional definition of marriage – that between a man and woman. They did not vote to take any constitutional rights away from the LGBT community. No restriction of civil rights was voted for by a single person. The vote was for a definition and not any taking away of rights. The common and oft repeated mantra of the LGBT community was that their equal rights had been taken away and literally, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact what the LGBT community wanted was equal financial benefits.
So let’s look at the simple solution that’s acceptable for both sides. Put up a ballot in each state which provides for civil unions for same sex marriages between 2 men or 2 women. The LGBT community gets what they want – equal financial benefits and the Christian, heterosexual community keeps what they have – the traditional definition of marriage between a man and a woman. The two can co-exist and isn’t that what we’re talking about?
See that? When we begin to look at things as human beings we can solve a lot of problems correctly. To illustrate it in a personal way- do I agree with the gay lifestyle and do I think it’s natural? IMHO no, however, I recognize and accept that every LBGT is a human being like me and its none of my business how anyone lives their own life. I have both gay and straight friends and we all get along and enjoy each others friendship … equally.
So fire away and let me know what you think.
